Statement on Vic & NSW Bushfires:

The bushfires that are engulfing parts of Victoria and New South Wales are absolutely devastating. The manner in which the emergency service workers and volunteers have gone about their duties without fear is truly commendable.  How we are all coming together to help those in need continues to make me proud to be an Australian.

Whilst we all feel helpless watching beautiful parts of our country burn, there is one thing we are being asked to do: donate money if we are financially able to do so.

The message from emergency services is that there are not enough resources to sort through donations that have been generously given by the community.

We need to make sure our emergency services are well-resourced to continue fighting blazes for many weeks… even months. They are understandably already exhausted.

For those capable of giving blood and or plasma, I urge you to contact your local Red Cross Donation Centre for an appointment to assist them during this busy holiday period.

Finally, a special thanks to the my Northern Victorian colleague Tania Maxwell MP and the work they have been doing recently in supporting those doing it tough.
